sweetgrass food Lodge
Our Mission
Sweetgrass Food Lodge mission is to provide food assistance and nutrition education to individuals and families in need within our community. The organization aims to promote food security, healthy eating habits, and cultural food traditions.
Food Security
Sweetgrass Food Lodge responds to a critical and ongoing food crisis on the Wind River Indian Reservation. According to a CDC-supported study, 65% of Native households here experience food insecurity, with over 20% facing very low food security, meaning regular disruption of food intake and reduced quality of nutrition (Porter et al., 2019). These rates are ten times higher than the national average, driven by limited access to fresh, affordable, and culturally relevant foods.
Our initiative works to change that by restoring access to traditional foods, supporting local food systems, and developing community infrastructure for storage, sourcing, and equitable distribution. We partner with community based organizations locally and nationally, local producers, hunters, and knowledge keepers to reclaim foodways. By increasing availability of wild game, heirloom crops, and traditionally prepared meals, we aim not only to alleviate hunger, but to reduce preventable diet-related illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension, both of which occur at significantly higher rates among Indigenous communities on Wind River.
Community Care
Community care means honoring our responsibility to one another through acts of nourishment, support, and cultural connection. Our approach centers Indigenous values of kinship, reciprocity, good medicine, and respect for all generations. We hope to support traditional meal giveaways, cultural food events, and support networks for Elders, families, and individuals facing mobility or income barriers. Rather than operating as a transactional service, Sweetgrass Food Lodge functions as a space for healing, storytelling, ceremony, and reconnection to land and identity.
By rebuilding communal relationships around food and wellness, we uplift not only physical health but also the emotional, spiritual, and cultural strength of our people.
EducationaL
Our long-term goal is to offer hands-on learning opportunities that reconnect youth and families with traditional food systems, land stewardship, and community wellness practices.
We actively support and collaborate with local educators, schools, and community programs that promote food sovereignty, health literacy, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). By aligning with existing educational efforts, we work to strengthen intergenerational learning, cultural identity, and self-determination through food.
As our infrastructure grows, we envision building out curriculum, hosting workshops, and providing space for Elders and knowledge keepers to share teachings that nurture the body, mind, and spirit.
